The Share Your Memories Project

The Houston Public Library is making preparations to launch the African American Library at the Gregory School located in historic Fourth Ward, Freedmen's Town.  This is a vital and long anticipated project for the Mayor and the City of Houston.

The Gregory School was Houston's first colored public school and the building will be completely renovated to house reference collections, archives, exhibits and artifacts to preserve the African American experience in Houston.  It will provide exciting and informative programs and a state of the arts research facility for scholars and others interested in Houston's African American history.

We are interested in every opportunity to document Houston's rich, African American heritage and we are asking that you help us by sharing your memories with us.

How can you help?
• Please consider donating copies of historical photographs or other printed or recorded documents to our archive collection.  Local historian, Patricia Smith Prather will be assisting us in creating an archival collection.

• Submit your own special memories of Freedmen's Town, Fourth Ward or the Gregory School by completing the online form.

• If you know someone with strong ties to Houston's African American History you can contact us or provide us with information to contact them.
